Universal translator at our doorstep?

If you EVER watched Star Trek or even heard of Captain Kirk and the rest of the gang then you probably know what a universal translator is. That piece of machinery helped the crew to speak with other alien races without the hassle hiring a translator. It seams that once again Star Trek was used as u muse for new technology breakthroughs. Japanese scientists from NEC developed Automatic Speech Translator (AST). It has a 50000 words vocabulary and the average translation time from Japanese to English/Chinese is two seconds to recognize the Japanese and fourteen for the complete translation.
